Colorado faces a significant challenge when it comes to polystyrene foam (Styrofoam) waste. The state recycling and composting rate was only 15% in 2024, and when it comes to Styrofoam, recycling rates are even lower, federal estimates suggest that less than 1% of polystyrene foam is recycled. Meanwhile, the polystyrene foam manufacturing industry in Colorado generates over $111 million annually, making it clear that a lot of this material ends up in landfills.
To combat this issue, Colorado implemented the Plastic Pollution Reduction Act in 2024, banning polystyrene takeout containers and cups at restaurants and schools. While this is a step forward, it does not address the vast amounts of Styrofoam used in packaging. GGR can help! ♻️
