Why Recycling Matters

Why Recycling Matters

When I started Green Girl Recycling almost 15 years ago, recycling wasn’t quite mainstream. Landfills were still teeming with waste that could have been recycled. Products such as handbags and playground equipment made from recycled items were nearly non-existent (see side bar for great recycled products). We have come a long way but we still have so many opportunities to do better. Statistics back up my belief that recycling truly does make a difference for the planet, our health, and our economy.

Recycling is Good for the Planet:Making products from raw materials contributes to the build- up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which leads to global warming and a host of other problems for the planet. Recycling helps save the earth’s resources by substituting the use of recyclable materials for trees, minerals, oil and other virgin materials.

Recycling is Good for Our Health:Most people don’t consider the health benefits of recycling. By choosing to recycle, you are preventing air and water pollutants from entering our environment and ultimately your body.

Recycling is Good for Our Economy: According to the Office of the Federal Environmental Executive, recycling and remanufacturing industries account for more than 1 million jobs and more than $100 billion in revenue each year! Investments in recycling technologies and businesses, along with innovative solutions to reuse materials, is excellent for our economy.
